FAQ
I’ve been in an accident. Who is liable for the repairs to my vehicle?
The answer depends on who was found at fault in the accident. If the accident resulted from someone else’s negligence or actions, then their insurance company is responsible for paying for the repair in full. If the accident resulted from your own error, your comprehensive or collision policy covers the repair, less the deductible. In this case you are responsible for paying the deductible amount.
What should I look for in a collision repair shop?
Your collision shop should be your partner in restoring your vehicle to good-as-new condition. You should feel confident in the honesty of the management and the expertise of the technicians. Your collision shop should provide a written warranty on all work and be knowledgeable about insurance companies and coverage. In short, your collision shop should be RJ&G Collision!
Does my insurance company guarantee the repair work to my vehicle?
No, the collision shop is responsible for the services provided and should provide a written warranty for all work performed.
Can my insurance company tell me which collision shop to use?
No, your vehicle is yours and you may choose where to have it repaired.
I’ve heard that I am required to get several estimates to submit to my insurance company. Is this true?
No. There is no set number of estimates required by law or regulation. You should only get estimates from shops where you are confident your vehicle will be restored to good-as-new condition. Talk to your insurance agent if you have any questions regarding specific coverage requirements.
Is there a fee to get an estimate?
No, RJ&G will never charge you a fee to provide a repair estimate. Our factory-trained and certified service technicians will provide a detailed estimate for every repair.
Why do repair estimates vary from shop to shop? Shouldn’t they be the same?
The insurance companies and most repair shops use three main estimating programs to arrive at repair estimates. All three programs calculate labor differently and may use varying material estimates. Still, the biggest factor causing estimate differences is that steps in the repair process may have been skipped or eliminated. If you have an estimate from another shop we are happy to go over it with you, step by step. Before you commit to a repair you should be comfortable that your vehicle is going to be 100% restored when you pick it up.
Can my insurance company say that I have to use after-market parts for my repair?
The answer used to always be “no”, but this is changing. While original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) parts are specifically built for your vehicle and are generally the best choice, there are situations where the age and condition of the vehicle become good reasons to use after-market parts. And many insurance companies are rewriting policies to give the insurer and not the vehicle owner the right to make the choice on whether to use OEM or after-market parts. Talk to your insurance agent if you have any questions regarding your specific coverage.
What determines if my vehicle is “totaled”?
A vehicle is considered to be a total loss, or “totaled”, when the cost of repairs exceeds 75% of the vehicle’s value. Value is determined by considering the vehicle’s overall condition, mileage, and options.
How long will my vehicle be in the shop?
We want do everything we can to minimize the length of time your vehicle is out of use for you. We will give you a time estimate along with the cost estimate and we will have your parts on hand before you bring in your vehicle.
What if I need a rental car?
We can help you make the arrangements for a rental car while your vehicle is with us. Some insurance policies will partially or fully cover the cost of a rental. Talk to your insurance agent if you have any questions regarding your specific coverage.

My vehicle looks great! How do I care for my new paint finish?
The care you take in the first 30 days after having your vehicle painted will keep your finish looking great for a long time. For the first 30 days:
- Wash your vehicle in the shade, using a mild car wash solution in cool water and a soft cloth or sponge.
- Don’t use a commercial car wash; they can damage the paint surface.
- Don’t wipe the surface with a dry cloth; this can easily scratch the surface.
- Don’t scrape snow or ice off a freshly painted surface.
- Don’t spill any solvent liquids on the new paint: gas, oil, windshield fluid, transmission fluid, antifreeze.
- Don’t drive on freshly graveled roads.
- Don’t park under anything that attracts birds to perch – trees, power lines, building overhangs. Bird droppings are acidic and will cause damage to new paint.
Also, for the first 90 days: don’t wax or polish your vehicle. The new finish needs to completely dry and harden before you polish it.
